The Importance of Stretching
Whether you lead a fairly desk-bound life or you’re always on the move, your body needs dedicated stretch time. It’s one of the best way to ease joint pain, improve blood flow, and even relieve stress. Stretching has multiple benefits for both your body and your mind. Incorporating stretching into your daily routine allows muscles to be well circulated and ultimately healthier. Do just one every day for a week-you'll be hooked on how great you feel.
Always do a quick 2-3 minute pre warm-up before stretching to warm up your muscles.
How long should you stretch?
To wake up or prep for a workout: Do dynamic stretching and don’t hold the stretches for longer than 30 seconds.
To get more flexible: Increase the range of motion by holding your stretches from two –five minutes. These should be done when you’re already warm and have some time to relax. The best times include right after a workout, right before bed, or after a hot shower.
Tips:
Use dynamic stretches before exercise to prepare your muscles. Dynamic stretches are active movements that cause your muscles to stretch, but the stretch is not held in the end position. These stretches are usually done before exercise to get your muscles ready for movement.
Use static stretches after exercise to reduce your risk for injury. Static stretches involve holding a stretch in a comfortable position for a period of time, typically between 10 and 30 seconds. This form of stretching is most beneficial after you exercise.
